Being a Consistent Christian

By Edward Thal /

Unbelievers reject the Bible’s extraordinary provisions to forgive human failure and its prescriptions for holiness because yielding to God means surrender to a Creator who will not settle for half measures. Self-centered humans resent the intrusion of what they see as an interfering, demanding God who wants to invade their lives and impact their values and even their essential human nature.

Alas, human prejudice and preference does not alter the fact that God is aware of every small detail of our existence and holds us accountable for everything we do or fail to do. It is impossible to hide from Him and the only way to reconcile with Him is to let Him in!

Many of us ignore the truth not because evidence for the truth is lacking but because we don’t want it to be true. Jesus addressed this human deviousness by declaring that if our will is to do God’s will we will know the truth (John 7:17).

After that, walking with God is as simple as following Micah 6:8

He hath shown thee, O man, what is good

and what doth the Lord require of thee

but to do justly, and to love mercy

and to walk humbly with thy God.

God is knowable, His will is knowable, His ways are knowable: but only on His terms. Being a consistent Christian means joyfully accepting this fact and living accordingly.
