The world is in its usual state of upheaval and uncertainty and it’s always a good time to plan and prepare for unfavorable circumstances.
But consider that the least concerned among us are those who don’t acknowledge God and don’t know Scripture. For them it’s life as usual—”the world is always crazy, and you’ve got to fight to stay on top.” Their ignorance of the eternal consequences of their beliefs and actions envelopes them in a blissful state of self-assurance about the ultimate calamity of their life after death.
They are the ones most to be pitied. We should also pity the many souls who acknowledge the existence of a god, perhaps even the Christian God, and live ordinary self-centered lives, “doing no harm” and hoping things will turn out okay in the end. Even pity the rich and well-connected who are insulated from the grubby existence of the 95 percent. They feel especially secure, though their security is a misleading vapor that will cost them dearly in the day of judgment.
Happily, there are some who know their God and enjoy the ultimate security of knowing who they are, why they are alive, and where they are heading, in this life and the next. Without discounting for a moment the serious implications of a world unravelling around us, Christians born into the family of God and well nourished by His Word should be able to calmly proclaim with the Apostle Paul: “I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him” (2 Timothy 1:12).
When we habitually respond in this way to the trials of life shared by all the descendants of Adam, our God becomes attractive to those whose only security is in the material world. That is a powerful reason to rejoice that we are alive at such a time as this (Esther 4:14)!
