We know a measure of love when we feel it towards others, or when we receive it. The Bible speaks of love in its many forms—divine, filial, emotional, erotic—but its most important statement on the subject is this: God is love (1 John 4:8).
Of all the sacred writings that define world religions only the Christian Scriptures make bold to declare this fact. Some are confused about love and make it a god, while others introduce us to gods that are vengeful, or angry, or capricious, or playful, or distant, or impersonal. The Bible alone states unambiguously that the essence of God is love, and then illustrates what it means in a way that is unique and unmistakable: love is an act of unrestrained giving, a sacrifice so complete for others so unworthy that recognition by those so loved inspires their total surrender.
This is Love:
God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son (John 3:16).
God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).
In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him (1 John 4:9).
This is how we know the Love of God. If His love is not yet personal to you, why not unwrap His amazing gift and make it your own?
