If your confidence is based on God’s presence rather than circumstances, you will experience the peace of God. However, many Christians do not live with the comforting presence of God as a daily reality. They do not draw strength from His Word and do not seek Him in prayer. They do not seek His guidance, neither do they fellowship with other believers as they gather around the Word of God.
That is a painful way to live the Christian life! It forfeits so much peace and comfort attainable only from God. Scripture shows us the better way:
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. (Psalm 139:7-10)
