FULL IMMERSION v. SPRINKLING

Dec 16, 2025 | Spiritual

No, this article is not about baptism—but the reference does provide a useful illustration for the difference between a lukewarm commitment that produces nothing of lasting value, and the achievements possible in a wholehearted commitment to any purpose. This is particularly true of the Christian life.

When it comes to baptism, the ordinance demands two obvious responses because of what it represents: an outward expression of an inner commitment to Jesus Christ as Savior, and a deliberate commitment to abandon a former way of living in favor of ongoing submission to Jesus Christ as Lord. Sprinkling of babies, on the other hand, is a man-made ritual that wrongly represents both the meaning and spirit of baptism and does a potentially fatal disservice to babies who will grow up believing they are certified Christians and automatic inheritors of heavenly eternal life.

The same principle applies to day-by-day life for actual members of the Body of Christ, saved and baptized. What comes next is all important for the quality and usefulness of their life on earth, and eternally important after their promotion to God’s heavenly realm.

Jesus is very direct about His attitude to those of His spiritual family who straddle the fence between living for Him and living for themselves: He says they make him want to vomit! (check the meaning of the word “spue” in Revelation 3:16). Clearly, the Lord who delights in showering us with His blessings (Ezekiel 34:26) is not satisfied when we settle for mere sprinkles.
