A Plague of Uncertainty

It is not unusual to hear that another “Christian” rock band leader has rejected Christ.

Falling away from faith in Jesus Christ is a tragedy that must be lamented whenever it occurs, but in an era of mega churches and fluffy sermonettes and frothy “music” it is not surprising.

Conversion to Christ that comes on a wave of emotion during a “worship service” is not a passage from death to life but a cheap and dangerous counterfeit that offers an ideal Jesus who welcomes us without encroaching on our personal space.

The altar of inner consecration to God, so necessary as a foundation for true worship, lies broken under the deadening weight of shallow Christianity that is more self-centered than God-centered. The worship that God seeks is based first on personal commitment to Him and to His Will, informed by His Word and enlivened by His Spirit. But these conditions cannot be met in churches populated by spiritual infants where the transforming power of God’s Word is not recognized, and the essential presence of God’s Spirit is not appreciated.

The result is worship in name only, and “worshippers” who will abandon Christ at the first trial of their faith. It is a lamentable plague of uncertainty found in growing numbers of churches. The tragedy is amplified when so-called “worship leaders” fall and their disillusioned young fans join them in a spiritual wilderness.
